(Taguig City) With the rising demands of electricity attributed to economic development, the Department of Energy (DOE) lead by Sec. Carlos Jericho L. Petilla intensifies the exploration and development of renewable energy (RE) sources through the milestone approach.
Under this method, the process of application for RE Service Contracts was slashed from 100 days to 45 days. This breakthrough ensured the entry of capable RE developers in the country. To date, the DOE already awarded 649 RE projects totaling a potential capacity 10,683.096 MW. Most of the awarded projects are Hydro based with a potential capacity of 6,158 MW. Currently, the installed capacity is already at 2,333.32 MW.
The DOE in coordination with the National Renewable Energy Board (NREB) remain committed in reaching the targets of the National Renewable Energy Plan (NREP). Under the plan, RE capacities will be tripled from the current installed capacity of 5,438 MW to 15,304 MW by 2030.
