TAGUIG CITY – Philippine Senior Official on Energy (SOE) and Senior Undersecretary Jesus Cristino P. Posadas reported on behalf of Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi  in the Special Meeting of ASEAN Ministers on Energy and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (AMEM-METI) held yesterday (21 June), that the Philippines has been carefully recalibrating the country’s energy policies and measures to ensure a just energy transition – one that would eventually help us realize the domestic and regional goals of attaining a sustainable energy future. 

Undersecretary Posadas also informed the Meeting of the updated 2018-2040 Philippine Energy Plan (PEP) and its Clean Energy Scenario (CES), which envisions the pathway towards attaining a low carbon sustainable energy future.  The CES builds on existing policies, incorporates the targets set in our National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), considers the ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) targets on energy efficiency and renewable energy (RE), together with the country’s mandated biofuels blending percentages. 

Other ASEAN Member States (AMS) presented also during the meeting their energy transition policies and efforts towards decarbonization.

Towards the end of the Meeting, the AMS and the METI of Japan adopted a joint statement that captures the collective vision of the Parties on enhancing partnerships as well as realizing energy transitions in the ASEAN.

The Special AMEM-METI Meeting served as the platform for Japan to discuss its proposal for a new initiative to support realistic energy transitions in Asia. 

AMEM provides political guidance and directions in the development and implementation of key energy sector priority initiatives and work programs that are consistent with the directives of Heads of States/Governments of ASEAN.
