DOE urges energy-conscious travel as Filipinos honor departed loved ones

As Filipinos prepare to travel to their hometowns this long weekend to pay respect to their departed loved ones, the Department of Energy (DOE) encourages everyone to exercise energy-conscious travel. By being mindful of energy consumption while on the road, Filipinos can help promote sustainability and contribute to a more efficient use of resources during this busy period.

"We recognize the importance of honoring our departed loved ones this All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. In line with this, we aim to ensure that everyone can travel safely and efficiently,” said Felix William B. Fuentebella, Supervising Undersecretary for the DOE-Energy Utilization Management Bureau (DOE-EUMB). “By making smart energy choices on the road and at home, we can support the country’s energy efficiency and conservation goals while ensuring a safe and comfortable journey for all.”

To make travel smoother and more fuel-efficient, the DOE encourages travelers to plan ahead by checking road conditions, traffic updates, and alternate routes to help reduce travel time and fuel use. Regular vehicle maintenance is essential for both safety and fuel efficiency; travelers should ensure their vehicles are properly fueled, in good condition, and equipped with a functioning emergency kit. Following speed limits, avoiding aggressive driving, and maintaining a steady speed can further improve fuel efficiency. Traveling during off-peak hours can also help avoid traffic congestion, while bringing sufficient water and snacks, especially for children and elderly passengers, can make the journey more comfortable.

The DOE also reminds travelers to be mindful of their home energy consumption while they are away. It is important to thoroughly check electrical outlets and ensure that all cords, extension cords, and electrical appliances are unplugged to prevent any potential energy wastage or safety hazards. Before leaving, travelers should also inspect these cords and appliances for any signs of damage, as faulty connections or worn cords can increase the risk of electrical issues in an unattended home. “Taking these simple precautions not only conserves energy but also promotes safety and peace of mind, especially when no one will be left at home,” Undersecretary Fuentebella added.

Additionally, the department encourages travelers to consider carpooling with family or friends or using public transportation options whenever possible. By reducing the number of vehicles on the road, travelers can help ease traffic congestion and decrease overall fuel consumption, contributing to both energy conservation and a more sustainable environment. Carpooling and public transport not only lowers individual fuel costs but also help lessen the demand on our transportation infrastructure, making travel safer and more efficient for everyone.

“Our actions today have a lasting impact on our families, communities, and the generations that follow,” added Undersecretary Fuentebella. “This holiday, as we honor the memory of our loved ones, let us also embrace the responsibility of wise energy use. Together, we can make this season one of both meaningful remembrance and sustainable practices that benefit our country.” ###
