The Department of Energy (DOE) has received a notice from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) that a Yellow Alert has been issued for the Luzon Grid between 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM today due to insufficient generation capacity. 

The current available capacity is 13,198 MW while the peak demand is 12,028 MW.

The DOE is closely coordinating with the NGCP and the generation companies to manage today’s demand. The Department is also urging electricity consumers to exercise judicious use of their electricity during this period to help manage the overall demand.  

Based on the initial report of NGCP, the 417.4 MW San Gabriel Gas Power Plant tripped, bringing the total of plantson forced outage to 1,358.7 MW. One plant has been on forced outage since 2023, eight between January and May 2024, and six power plants between June and July 2024. Additionally, six plants are derated by 294 MW. These outages and derated capacities account for a total of 1,652.7 MW of unavailable capacity, or equivalent to 9.32% of 17,734.840 MW total dependable capacity in the Luzon Grid.

The Visayas and Mindanao Grids are under normal condition. 

A Yellow Alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
