TAGUIG CITY - The Department of Energy (DOE) is continuously monitoring the supply and demand situation in the Luzon Grid.
As of 9:00AM, the Luzon Grid is in normal system condition. There are currently enough power supply reserves to accommodate the projected demand, which has significantly decreased due to adverse weather condition.
Barring any sudden increase in demand, no rotational outages are expected to happen within the day.
SUPPLY AND DEMAND FIGURES
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) projected a total available capacity of 11,601 MW, relative to the projected peak demand of 10,331 MW as of 9:00AM today.
Kindly refer to the accompanying table for the breakdown of powerplants in the Luzon Grid on Outage as of 9:00AM today (3 June 2021).
• Total Planned outage = 435 MW
• Total Unplanned / Forced Outage = 1,314 MW
• Total Major Derating = 484 MW (Ilijan’s reduced output to 716 MW due to ongoing Malampaya gas restriction from 835 MW in the previous week)
Pagbilao Coal-Fired Power Plant Unit 2 (382 MW), which is currently on forced outage since June 2, 2021, is expected to return to service on June 6, 2021.
GNPower Mariveles Energy Center (GMEC) Coal-Fired Power Plant Unit 2 (316 MW), which is currently on forced outage since June 1, 2021, is expected to return to service on June 8, 2021.
GNPower Mariveles Energy Center (GMEC) Coal-Fired Power Plant Unit 1 (316 MW), which is currently on forced outage since February 6, 2021, is expected to return to service on August 31, 2021.
Sem-Calaca Coal-Fired Coal-Fired Power Plant Unit 2 (300 MW), which is currently on forced outage since December 3, 2020, is expected to return to service on July 1, 2021.
WAY FORWARD
The DOE continues to monitor the power situation and will update and inform our consumers regularly on the status of our power supply.
We have been working closely with the other enforcement agencies in pursuing options available to us to ensure that unplanned, prolonged, and perhaps even alleged malicious activities of certain players in the energy sector are scrutinized, investigated, and possibly penalized by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), the Philippine Competition Commission, and the Department of Justice. Likewise, we remind the distribution utilities as well as the system operator of their contracting obligations to address the needed capacity increases for a reliable power system for its consumers.
The DOE is pursuing its long term strategy of addressing the power supply and demand situation during the summer season and forward to the resumption of our country’s economic activities and recovery. We have put in place redundancies and even double redundancies to ensure the safe storage of our vaccines especially during this crucial period in our government’s vaccine rollout, and have laid out contingencies for the stable, reliable and accessible power for all.
